In New York City, where space is always at a premium, the Arlo SoHo hotel has managed to turn small well-designed rooms into a selling point for today's modern travellers who spend most of their time out and about.

The Arlo SoHo hotel offers thoughtfully designed micro guest rooms that combine flexible, modern furniture with efficient storage spaces and a range of playful touches. At 50 square-metres (150 square feet), Arlo’s rooms are small, even by local standards. But remember, this is Lower Manhattan, and the economics of space are not in your favour.

However, the hotel’s 325 rooms have been cleverly designed to maximize the small space with smart little touches, like pegboards for hanging clothes, folding desks, and bespoke Jefferson beds that form a cosy nook with built-in storage, reading lights, clocks, and window shade controls. Remeber to just pack decisively.

When you decide to leave the room, the hotel features a stunning rooftop bar that serves cocktails, local craft beers on a large terrace with views of the Hudson. The hotel also offers a casual dining restaurant, Meat + Three which supplies deliciously simple mix-and-match meals and the 24-hour artisan pantry Bodega is an appetising option for the peckish.

The hotel offers free bicycle hire so make sure you take a moment to get out and explore this wonderful city on two wheels.

Location

With its cobblestone streets and cast-iron buildings, the historic district of SoHo is nothing if not distinctive. Once known for its affordable artists' lofts made from disused manufacturing spaces, it's now gone upscale, and is one of New York's retail centres, with everything from mainstream chain shops to one-off boutiques.

How to get there

Newark International Airport is 24 km from Arlo Soho. On a normal day, it should take around 30-minutes by taxi to get there.

The airport can also be reached entirely by public transport from the Subway stop outside the hotel. From the airport, take the Northeast Corridor line to Penn Station. Change on to lines 1 or 2 and get off Canal Street. You'll find the hotel 1 block to the west on Hudson St.
