A pair of historic buildings in central Kiev, Ukraine have been creatively united to create BURSA – a new 33-room hotel that embraces the classic styles of Bauhaus with a respectful homage to Ukrainian art and culture.

The BURSA Hotel, located in the Kiev suburb of Podil, was designed by local studio Balbek Bureau for 24-year-old Russian entrepreneur Vasily Grogol. The hotel includes a non-commercial art gallery, 33 contemporary guest rooms, a ground-floor restaurant, and a top-floor bar that opens onto a rooftop terrace.

The project involved renovating two historic buildings—one which is 100 years old, and the other about 200 years old—and connecting them to a newly built, modern block to create a modern and dynamic space.

The design studio worked hard to retain much of the original buildings’ fabric, with straight lines and geometric shapes appearing against the original bare brick walls and exposed pipework of BURSA’s interiors.

There are 33 rooms in the hotel which range in size from your standard double room to a rather spacious collection of suites that offer high ceilings and either a bath or a shower some of the suites feature a balcony with expansive views over the city rooftops.

Along side the beautifully design rooms, BURSA also offers an amazing 360°rooftop bar called 1818 which is open to hotel guests only, as is the Library Bar. Both are a great place to work in silence or enjoy a glass of wine and read up on Ukrainian art and culture.
