Gently nestled into the tussock grasslands in the rolling foothills of the Ben Ohau range on the South Island of New Zealand sits the Skylark Cabin.
Skylark Cabin is private, luxury accommodation, nestled serenely within the awe-inspiring landscape of backcountry Ben Ohau on the South Island of New Zealand. Surrounded by the soaring southern mountain range and the rugged, raw beauty of the wild and untouched landscape, this isn’t just a comfortable place to stay while visiting New Zealand, it’s an experience in itself.
Named after the birds that nest on the property, Skylark Cabin is a one-of-a-kind architecturally designed holiday cabin. It was built in 2020 and designed by winning architect Barry Connor who set out with the goal of trying to make the most of the awe-inspiring vistas that surround it, and we truly believe he nailed it.
The interior consists of two offset open-plan spaces. One space contains the bedroom and bathroom and is positioned to allow morning sun in both winter and summer to filter through. These spaces are orientated towards the stunning Black Hills and Backbone Peak. The other space holds the kitchen, entry, and living areas with closer views of the snow-capped Ben Ohau range.
The cabin is equipped with all the essentials and amenities you need for a comfortable, luxurious getaway for two, but also comes with that sense of minimalism and simplicity that gives you the space you need to feel blissfully removed from the rush of everyday.
The cabin is located within the world's largest night sky reserve, which means its one of the best places in the world to truly experience the night sky in all its stunning glory. The bedroom has a stunning port-hole style skylight in the ceiling which allows you to lie in bed in comfort at night and spot satellites and search for your favourite constellations in the stars.
The Skylark Cabin sits within the world-acclaimed Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve smack bang in the middle of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located just 10-minutes from the local township of Twizel and sits on 10 acres (4 hectares) of peaceful, private land. Here nature takes centre stage, in every direction you look.
Due to the somewhat remote location of the Cabin, it's best that you hire a car (if you don't already have one) and drive. This is truly the best way to explore this part of the country and offers the most efficient way to get around and explore more of what the region has to offer. The two nearest International Airports are located in Christchurch and Queenstown. Twizel is 280km from Christchurch (around 3 hours by car) and 200km from Queenstown (around 2 and half hours by car).
