Midway along the glorious Provence coast between St. Tropez and Cannes lies the boutique hotel Les Roches Rouges. This retro stay has sweeping views of the Mediterranean, a sleek aesthetic and a photogenic stoned-lined pool by the surf.

In the heart of the Côte d’Azur, azure blue, pure white and ochre red are the colors celebrated in this hotel perched on the water’s edge, close to the Esterel National Park, where holidays are experienced to the rhythm of the sea and the sunlight.

Despite its modern, clean lines and its super trendy interiors, the hotel isn’t new, exactly. The original structure dates back to the 1950s and has been through several iterations since then. Renowned Parisian architecture firm Festen has reworked the hotel completely and helped breathe a new fresh life into it by dismantling the eighties-era decorations to reveal the building’s original charm.

View from one of the rooms

The hotel has 48 rooms and 2 suites. Almost all of them have a balcony and face out towards the ocean and feature stunning views for as far as the eye can see. All the rooms are equipped with historic, custom-made pieces, and vintage furniture inspired by Provence and the French Riviera.

There are two on-site restaurants and three bars serving up tastes and food directly from the surrounding community.

The hotel benefits from two swimming pools, including a large natural seawater pool, a Mediterranean garden, three bars, two restaurants and an array of activities, both in and around the hotel. For example, once a week the hotel hosts a movie night in the garden and plays old French classics and on weekends offer free Yoga sessions for the health conscious.

Location

Along the famous stretch of coastline known as the French Riviera lies Saint Raphael on the Côte d’Azur, in South-Eastern France. The Hotel Les Roches Rouges is located just 10 minutes east of the city and is perched on the edge of the red cliffs opposite the famous Ile d’Or island fortress (which is rumored to have inspired the writings of Hergé).

The area around St. Raphael and the hotel has a variety of beaches, some with fine sand, some with pebbles and there are stretches with rocky outcrops. Part of the fun of staying in this part of France is being able to explore the amazing little French towns up and down the coast. Some top picks that we highly recommend are Cannes (famous for their Film Festival), Grasse (Perfume & summer Lavender Fields) and Saint-Paul de Vence (a cute picturesque town on a hill).

How to get there

The hotel is located on about 10 minutes by car/taxi out of Saint-Raphael. Saint-Raphael has a TGV station that has hourly Trains to Lyon, Paris, Marseille, and Nice. From these cities, you can then connect to almost anywhere else in Europe, by either train or plane.

If you are arriving by plane, the two nearest major airports are the Nice Côte d'Azur Airport and the Marseille Provence Airport. Both are around 1 hour from Saint-Raphael by train or about 90mins if you are driving.

We highly recommend you hire a car if you are planning to be at the hotel for more than a couple of nights as it is a little bit out of town and Taxis can be quite expensive.
