Crystal Peak Lookout is a stunning little red lookout tower situated on the slopes of Crystal Peak in Northern Idaho. Built in the 1950s as a hunting lodge, it was completely remodelled in 2018 under the creative guidance of its new owner, Kristie Wolfe, into an immersive deep-forest getaway.

Crystal Peak Lookout was built in 1959s and was originally located in Chewelah, WA on top of Stranger Peak. In 1983 it was moved to Northern Idaho to the cedar and tamarack lined slopes of Crystal Peak. It in 2018, Crystal Peak Lookout underwent an extensive renovation and restoration to bring it up to modern standards.

Access is gained by matching red wooden steps and a trapdoor. Inside, it measures 18.2 sq m, and consists of a single space containing a double bed, some seating and shelving, a kitchenette with stove, a cooler, a sink, and a wood-burning stove. You’ll be surrounded by windows in the lookout, allowing the sun to gently wake you up to enjoy the view.

In addition to the lovely, light-filled living space, there are two more structures located on the property. The first one is an unassuming pitched-roof outhouse, and the other is an old woodshed that Wolfe transformed into a wood-fired sauna. This tranquil building comes with an outdoor deck and seating around a fire-pit. It offers the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate your body after a big hike or snowshoeing adventure.

Important to note

You must have a 4WD vehicle to access the lookout. In the winter (which can start in late October) you’ll need snowmobiles or the equivalent to get to the property.

Location

The Lookout sits atop Crystal Peak on 13 acres of wild forest. You most likely won’t see or hear another person during your stay. There’s plenty of hiking around if you fancy exploring the area, huckleberry and mushroom picking (if in season) & if you're really lucky you might get a visit from the resident moose!

The Lookout is about a 20 minute drive from the tiny town of Fernwood, Idaho. There’s not much there other than a mercantile store that has a little bit of everything. The nearest big town is St. Maries, and the nearest city is Spokane in Washington, which is about 2 hours away by car.
